Why Barrel Horses Are Costly

If you are looking to buy a horse for running barrels, you may be in for a sticker shock. The price on a fully trained, "automatic" barrel horse has become quite high. It is possible to find a nice barrel horse for under $5000, but you must either be very lucky, or be willing to take your time and not get into any hurry.

There is no golden rule about a horse's worth; it is all about what someone is willing to pay. So if there are people out there willing to pay $20,000 or $30,000 for a horse, you can bet there are people willing to sell you a horse for that price.

Based off of what you are looking for in a horse, the price will always vary. Taking out a loan for a horse will not guarantee you will win at every rodeo, even though more and more people are doing this. The price of a barrel horse usually shows three things: good (or at least popular at the time) proven bloodlines; what the horse has done in the arena itself; and what the seller thinks the horse is worth.

Look at any site that has barrel horses for sale and you will quickly come across horses with price tags at ten, twenty and thirty thousand dollars. If you are looking at national or world champions, the price can be even higher. If you are considering any of these price ranges when looking for a barrel horse, make sure you are getting what you want.

The horse should be ready to load into your trailer, go to a rodeo and win. There should be no problems that need to be worked on, no alley way issues, and no problems with running the pattern. There should be absolutely no health problems and the horse should be completely sound. A horse that actually fits this description is hard to come by, so I guess in some way that means justification on the big price tag.

If you are going to spend big bucks on a horse, there are things you MUST do before writing out that fat check. First of all, the horse should be registered and great bloodlines. This may not mean much too some people, but if you ever want to sell the horse, this is always a great selling point.

Secondly, look at the horse. Check out the confirmation. Does he look like an athletic horse capable of running fast and turning on a dime? Some really great horses don't have perfect confirmation, but with this kind of money being spent, you will want them built well. Next, have the horse completely checked out by a veterinarian whom you trust.

The horse should be healthy, a relatively young age, able to compete for years to come and be up-to-date on all shots, including have a clean coggins test. Have the horse's hooves looked at and determined what kind of shoes are needed along with how the horse is trimmed.

You don't want to make a mistake and have your farrier use his own approach if a certain way already works great. After you determine that the horse is registered, healthy and in good condition you need to ride the horse. Make arrangements to ride the horse at an arena if possible. You will want to see how the horse runs the pattern and how well the two of you fit together. The most important thing when riding the horse is to see if you are compatible with the horse.

Take the horse through the pattern at whatever pace you feel comfortable with, but make sure you make a few runs as though you were at an event. The horse should be quiet and calm at the gate; you should not have to deal with a horse who is too excited to listen to your cues when entering an arena. Lastly, ride the horse away from the arena and away from his familiar barn surroundings.

You will want to see how he behaves in different places. Expect the owner to be present while you are with the horse. They will not want to leave their expensive horse in the hands of a stranger (you) even though they should not interfere with how you ride the horse.

If all of these things check out with the horse and you are extremely happy, you have found the horse for you. You should be able to immediately enjoy the pleasure of entering and winning at shows and rodeos on your new purchase.
